How Dennis scratched his own itch by building a server management tool himself

How Dennis scratched his own itch by building a server management tool himself

1. Hi, πŸ‘‹ What’s your name and your business?

My name is Dennis Smink and my business is Ploi, a server management tool.

2. Can you tell us more about your background on how you started?

I started in 2017 with the tool, a real basic start that didn’t really do much special. I never finished it that year as I had too much work with other projects which had deadlines.

Then in January 2018, this stabilized more, and I made a new start with the tool. At this point I came so far that I couldn’t stop; it was too much damn fun to work on it.

The project is completely written in PHP with the Laravel framework.Β

You can read more about this starting story in my article here.

3. What does a typical day look like for you?

I have divided my days into specific parts since 2019, it exists of;

Bookkeeping, support, programming, SEO optimization,Β  marketing, and social media management -> this is all regarding Ploi. There is no specific order because I give priority to the thing that needs attention the most. If I have a lot of support tickets over the night, I give priority to that. If I need to finish a feature then I give priority to that; it is flexible.

I also have a few other own projects and customers where I do work on (some Laravel eCommerce etc.) which I put in between those tasks.

4. What is your biggest lesson learned in SaaS?

Don’t overthink with numbers, it takes time (and with that I mean with registrations, but also revenue). People have to gain trust in your tool and you have to do a lot about SEO optimization to get your tool out there.

5. Which tools are your favorite to work with?

PHPStorm, Crisp, SequelPro, Tower GIT, iTerm, Google Chrome, and Ploi πŸ˜‰.

6. What is your favorite app on your phone?

Twitter, all the developer’s related stuff is on there.

7. What is your favorite book?

I don’t really read that many books, but the ones I do are about programming in PHP in general, also refactoring, structuring and code style is my favorite to read.
