Eelco is building his platform for e-commerce from his campervan

πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Meet SaaS Pirate Eelco from Belco!

1. Hi πŸ‘‹, What’s your name and your business?

Hey! I’m Eelco and I’m co-founder & CTO of Belco.io. A customer service platform for e-commerce.

2. Can you tell us more about your background on how you started?

I still remember very clearly how a friend of mine was coding some HTML, probably about 18 years ago. I asked him what the <br> was for and so my interest in programming was created. We didn’t have any internet yet back home, but I started making my own websites in Microsoft Frontpage and quickly started editing the generated HTML.

As I already thought myself to program and also liked design work, I decided to focus on interaction design on university. One of my first real projects was an open-source CMS, which I later sold to a webdesign agency here in the Netherlands.

After freelancing for about 10 years, I wanted to build my own product again and started Belco together with Edwin Kruis.

3. What does a typical day look like for you?

I’ve been traveling a lot in the last few years, so my typical days really depend on where I am and what my personal focus is at the time.

Currently, I live in a DIY campervan which turned out to be detrimental for all the good habits I’ve built up in recent years 😜

Typically I try to get up as early as possible, after freshing up I like to meditate for a while. Then get my tea or coffee, check out the crypto markets and check my emails. I’m most productive in the morning so then I’ll do 3 hours focused programming. After lunch, I usually do smaller programming tasks like bug fixing and help our customers.

After work, I like to do some running or go for a long walk to wind down.

4. Which tools are your favorite to work with?

Tools I use on a daily basis are: Github, VSCode, Sketch, Slack, Upvoty, and Spotify is really invaluable!

5. What is your favorite app on your phone?

Probably Google Maps πŸ™‚

6. What is your favorite book?

Don’t really have one favorite, but I was really impressed with Shantaram. Also liked the Celestine Prophecy & The Alchemist. Other books The Power of Now and Man’s Search for Meaning.
